Nadia Comaneci, from Romania, was credited with popularizing the sport of gymnastics with her stunning performance in the 1976 Olympics held in Montreal, Canada.   Just 14 years old at the time, Nadia was the first gymnast to score a perfect 10 (on the bars in the team competition) in Olympic competition.  Scoreboards were not equipped to show a perfect 10 score, so it showed as 1.00.   Nadia won the all-around gold medal and a gold on the balance beam and bars (both perfect 10 scores), as well as team silver medal and bronze (floor).  Four years later, in the 1980 Olympics in Moscow, she again won gold in the balance beam and floor (tied with Nellie Kim), and silver medals in the all-around and team.  Above are her historic perfect 10 performance on the balance beam and uneven bars at the 1976 Olympics.
